The Need
  1. There is a proven (and growing) demand for fish that far exceeds existing supply in Tanzania.
  2. Now celebrating it’s 10th year, OneLove Africa has a strategic vision towards long-term sustainability with less dependence on private donations and sponsorship.
  3. Village mamas we work with often have no local resources (i.e. water, customer base) and frequently lack technical skills to leverage into a business opportunity. They need skills and/or products to sell.

The Solution
OneLove Africa is setting up a sustainable social enterprise - a fish farm (tilapia and catfish) that will include a training centre focused on entrepreneurial empowerment programs for village mamas.
Our Customers
  1. Commercial fish wholesalers/distributors (Tanzania/Kenya)
  2. Mamas who are trained to set-up fish businesses

The Win-Win
We will teach mamas the skills to start successful fish businesses ~ provide them with a steady source of inventory at below-market prices ~ and extend credit during their start-up phase. This also ensures OneLove a guaranteed customer base (in addition to the known commercial demand). Working with 20 mamas in each program, we will also encourage them to form a cooperative.
Fish: A Growing Sector
The demand for fish in Tanzania has seen an 88% increase in fish farms in 15 years (2004: 14,100 - 2019 - 26,445). 97% of fish is sourced from small-scale fisheries. Demand continues to grow as the population is anticipated to hit 100 million by 2038 – most living on less than $1.90 USD per day. Conditions for other sources of protein (beef, pork, chicken) are problematic.
Operations
  • Four fishponds set on 1.5 acres in Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. Ideal location/distribution hub with access to good water supply.
  • ‘Fingerlings’ purchased at two months of age – harvested at six months. 12 monthly harvests of 15,000 fish annually (potentially more in years 2 and 3).
  • Distributed by refrigerated trucks 20 days/month to village hubs easily accessible by our mamas (eliminating high transportation expense for them). Commercial accounts to be charged shipping.
  • 1,000 square foot centre with training room, office and washroom. Opportunity for expansion.
  • Six entrepreneurial development programs annually (20 mamas per program).
